Ian Chappel on SRT

Ian Chappell, the former Australian captain, has come down hard on Sachin Tendulkar, saying the time had come for him to consider quitting the game. Chappell said that the Tendulkar decision would be crucial as India try and rebuild after their shocking first round exit from the ongoing World Cup.

Tendulkar managed only 64 runs in India's three first-round matches of the World Cup, and couldn't make much of an impact against Bangladesh (7) and Sri Lanka (0), the two games India lost.

"Before anybody else makes a decision on what will happen to Tendulkar the player himself has to have a good long look in the mirror and decide what he's trying to achieve in the game," Chappell, 63, wrote in Mid-Day, a Mumbai-based tabloid. "At the moment he looks like a player trying to eke out a career; build on a glittering array of statistics. If he really is playing for that reason and not to help win as many matches as he can for India then he is wasting his time and should retire immediately."

Chappell went on to compare Tendulkar with Brian Lara, the West Indian captain, and pointed out how the latter hadn't changed his style of play over a 17-year career. "This is a credit to his technique and mental strength, as the aging process generally makes a player more progressively conservative," Chappell wrote of Lara. "Tendulkar hasn't worn as well; his last three or four years have been a shadow of his former self.

Chappell took into consideration the slew of injuries that Tendulkar had suffered during his career, a factor that had forced him to miss a number of matches in this decade. "Tendulkar hasn't been as lucky as Lara," Chappell wrote, "the Indian batsman has suffered a lot of injuries in this period where his play has deteriorated and there is nothing that melts your mental approach quicker than physical handicaps. Lara has been relatively free from injury and he certainly doesn't have the weight of numbers riding on his shoulders that Tendulkar does. However, the population of the Caribbean might be small but they are extremely demanding.

"Despite all the fuss and the odd controversy that has surrounded Lara's career he has remained himself; this is my game and that is how I play. For whatever reason Tendulkar hasn't been able to maintain his extremely high standards for the last few years and unless he can find a way to recapture this mental approach he's not doing his team or himself any favours.

"If Tendulkar had found an honest mirror three years ago and asked the question; 'Mirror, mirror on the wall who is the best batsman of all?' It would've answered; 'Brian Charles Lara.' If he asked that same mirror right now; 'Mirror, mirror on the wall should I retire?' The answer would be; 'Yes.' -----------

"what else can one say"? one can say that Ian Chappel who has no business with the indian team or in no way related to indian cricket should shut his mouth, as his passing comments will have a bad impact on the indian audience. While comparing Lara and Tendulkar, Chappel doesnt realise that no one has given him that authority and only indian's can be foolish enough to publish a random X cricketer's opinion about 2 good players of the present day. Had the change in style of play of Sachin Tendulkar been a great success, will Ian Chappel say that Sachin is a genius to the media? Or when Sachin was a genius, did he come out and write in a Mumbai Tabloid that "he is the best in the world at present?" i have never heard of a name Ian Chappel appreciating Sachin Tendulkar. I have never heard of the name Ian Chappel as the one doing career analysis for Sachin tendulkar. I beliee that Chappel has no authority and if he had COMMEN SENSE he would not have made such a statement in an INDIAN media in SUCH A SITUATION. I am just saying that when tendulkar decided to change his style of play he was a cricketing genius, and he was courageous enough to try somehting new and no one had the balls to question his decision. It dint work out. So now the world would do good to wait, and respect the MASTER BRAIN than give suggestions of their own. If failure means retirement, god knows how many times Lara and Sachin should have retired in their career. Please do think about publicising these articles in your blog as some of them may deem these unnecessary. When we discuss something it is different. We are passionate supporters, and who is Ian Chappel? So the question now is, "DO u want Sachin to retire?"

To the 'cricket-emotional' sriram:

S : "one can say that Ian Chappel who has no business with the indian team or in no way related to indian cricket should shut his mouth, as his passing comments will have a bad impact on the indian audience."

M: machan, he has every right to say what he feels. Do you know that Ian chappel was one of the greatest players for Australia. So he is not "someone" for nuts. Plus what do u mean bad impact on the indian audience. Arent we influenced by the experts opinions. After all they have played this great game and they have every right to voice their opinion. Dont they? Plus when we normal people can, why not an expert and that too if by an Australian, I think we can take it up more seriously. Aussies dont they mess with opinions and words do they?

S: "Had the change in style of play of Sachin Tendulkar been a great success, will Ian Chappel say that Sachin is a genius to the media? Or when Sachin was a genius, did he come out and write in a Mumbai Tabloid that "he is the best in the world at present?" i have never heard of a name Ian Chappel appreciating Sachin Tendulkar."

M: machan ,did you know that SRT change of ploy was not any failure or anything that you feel. Infact he has been aggressive during matches. But now consider this situation. If Shewag is batting and he is on 99, India needs 50 runs with 3 tail end batsmen left and not many balls to spare, he ends up scooping it to the guy at long on attempting a six, what do u feel? You think you would spare him..We ll say "who needed his 99 if he cant win for us"..Infact we ll say that India losing by 10 runs or 100 runs doesnt make a difference since a loss is a loss.
Now replace shewag with a SRT. what would you feel?So it was natural that he had to change his style to make sure he becomes the pillar of the batting. But then in all liklihood he didnt realize at times when he needed to be cautious and when he needed to fire. He just got carried away by the situation and felt the nation was dependent on him. I feel thats where our man went wrong and Chappel is right when he says Lara never curbed his style of playing at any time. Infact he was cautious till he reaches a 30 and then he goes all guns irrespective of who he is playing with or who is batting partner is!! Thats lara and thats greatness!!!Chappel gets a 100 for that in my opinion.

S: " I beliee that Chappel has no authority and if he had COMMEN SENSE he would not have made such a statement in an INDIAN media in SUCH A SITUATION."

M: emotional shit..cut that crap!

S: "If failure means retirement, god knows how many times Lara and Sachin should have retired in their career. Please do think about publicising these articles in your blog as some of them may deem these unnecessary"

M: its not about retiring but its about sacking!!That would do good..I hope you are aware that lara was also in this situation a decade back when he was sacked as the captain and jimmy adams was made captain. He choose to take a break which many felt helped him come back more refreshed and energized!! infact somepple think he was sacked and the board didnt announce it to the public.

S:We are passionate supporters, and who is Ian Chappel? So the question now is, "DO u want Sachin to retire?"

M: Ya we are passionate..Chappel can be garlanded for his statements!!Sachin MUST take time from the ODI game and decide.. I am a mere mortal to suggest but then it would do good for the country and himself if he takes time out to plan his future which i am sure the master brain will do!!

LOL Sriram ... Two days back u were ranting about how SRT is the only guy who "makes ordinary balls looks like extra ordinary ones" ... And now, this. Dint i Say ur opinions shift from one extreme to the other rather quickly...

Ian Chappell of course is a very respected, "cricket expert" if you like. But, such stuff is not entirely unexpected ... You get criticism when you dont perform up to the expectations of the people...

I think its time for SRT to decide himself about what he wants to do .. Mind you, not because I believe he has been very pathetic or something, but because only he would know if something is hindering him, either mentally, or physically, like his tennis elbow or something ... If he decides that everything is fine, then he should continue going. The BCCI will never dare to drop him. Even the CA wudnt drop a player like him, if they ever had one, that is. The Indian team needs him at this stage ... I am guessing he is gonna be appointed the vice captain of the Indian ODI team for the Bangladesh tour.

Ya i do agree that he needs to take his own course of action..Its time we dont read too much into his future but instead just debate about whether he is one of the greatest players or not..I think that would fuel our discussions more than anything else!! Plus sriram is just angry that its an Ian chappel who is saying that..nothing more!!its a case of a person who feels his country is shit but then defends it against foriegners when ridiculed..I dont think thats bad!

if i can have a word or two

Now there has been a lot of talk about two things wrt tendulkar

1) he has not been a match-winning player

2) over the years , his style of game has changed and he plays more defensively

both are 100 % true . Yes , Tendulkar has never played the same number of match-winning innings that Lara or Steve Waugh or Ponting or even for that matter Dravid have played . And yeah , the tendulkar we see now is no longer the kind of player we saw 6 years back . More cautious , more subtle innings player .

But does that amount to questioning tendulkar's genius or his very presence in the team is something we need to ponder over and debate

With regards to being a match-winning player. Why is that brilliance is often equated to winning matches? when it comes to being a match-winner , the first name that comes to my mind is michael bevan . hmmm yeah steve waugh also . But they are always known as "respected players of world cricket" But if u ask any cricket fan - who is the most "celebrated player in cricketing history" - Sachin is the reply you are bound to get bombarded with. Sachin is a Joy , a Celebration , a Pleasure to watch . 17 years in cricket , none have provided the same kind of entertainment and the thrill that Tendulkar has provided over the years . no - Not even shane warne or Lara or KP ( as some ppl say ;D). There have been instances where he has played a gem of an innings yet the team let him down . But neither the media nor the public question that . "Tendulkar crumbles in big stage situations" - was the comment everyone had when he failed to score in the finals of wc2003 . But what about the 600-odd runs he piled in the tournament . None care

David Beckham is arguably the most entertaining footballer the world has ever seen . Yet , he has never won a world cup for england . Neither has Luis Figo . So that amounts to questioning their brilliance or their class?

Tendulkar to me is an entertainer .The square cuts , the drives , the late-flicks , the paddle sweeps are sheer joyous moments to watch. He provides me value for money entertainment someway or other - batting , bowling or fielding . While everyone questions his enthusiasm for the game and equate it to his failure in batting . Let me ask you something ? Has the world ever seen a better part-time bowler ( all rounder i would say but most ppl disagree , few mite even ridicule ) than Tendulkar ? After Sobers , by far he is best "entertaining" all rounder the world has seen . At a time when ppl say if you are over 30 years of age - you are an okay fielder , Tendulkar still shows the same enthu he had 10 years back . None have questioned his fielding or running between the wickets as of now . Show me a better fielder than Sachin who is over 30 ! Ponting , yes . Murali on par , anyone anyone????

And regarding his batting technique - Yes , he is not the same kinda aggressive player he used to be . All batsmen go through these phases . Its not a questioning of getting old - its more about being more mature. Has it affected his game? Nope His strike rate is still in high 80s . May be the way he makes runs might look un-tendulkarish but the question is whether he still makes or not and what cost . And playing at no 4 affects it to a greater extent when he clearly wants to be an opener . For an attacking player like Sachin , you gotta give him the most number of overs to face . To me the theories on being in middle order providing stability is Bull .

Besides all these , show me one cricket of sachin's calibre whose cricketing image has been so clean and non - controversial . Murali = racism and chucking . Warne = doping Ponting and Waugh = sledging , Lara = anti WI cricket board protests , Ganguly = aaah ,

So yeah , never has once sachin hinted that he is tired of playing the game or lost his enthu . And if he ever does , it's time to hang up the boots . Until then , He shall be a sheer joy to watch . And I am happy Ian Chappell has shown how ignorant he is ! Sachin shall reply in style as he has always ever .

To Aj.Nathen:

Mr.Nathen, i totally agree that he is an entertainer..But consider this..Why are we hyping him? What is it in him tat makes him stand more than a Steve Waugh or a Dravid or any other class player that we know..

Have u heard of Arvinda De Silva? When you associate crisis, two men stand apart - Waugh and De-Silva. Go KP has a valid point when he says the pitches have become flatter now and its more easier to score than before..So lets minus the genuises like punter and kallis or a boucher for tht matter.

Now, these two geniuses in their own right way have never been celebrated / hyped as is our man!But then our man is a hero in every sense of the word.. He is a delight, a joy, worth ur money / time , ur girl friend (:P) or anything! he is a sheer naturally talented cricketer who was born only for the game and is def a toast of the nation. India has never celebrated a cricketer like him and his charecteristics are simply too good..He is extremely passionate to fans (to pple like Arushi also ooooppp )and has no controversies along..Thats the greatness of the man and thats all known to even a god damn kid..

But now thats not the point right..its more abt whether we are hyping him too much and in the process not acknowledging an equal comrade like dravid or someone like the unlucky laxman..lets face facts..he has been the pillar of indian batting for a long time, he has held the team during crisis and infact he is the person all juniors consult and be free with when they first enter the team..But again thats the basic nature of the man and srt as a man is a gem that the world has never seen..

When you know that cricket is what is being spoken about, the onfield activites take priority and not the off field ones. I do agree thats its the person but now we look at sheer cricket..He has not been a match winner nor has he been a player who has bailed India out of trouble. Infact stats show that out of India's loses SRT has figured in the maximum loses. This clearly means that he has not had a supportive team..Will all these considerations in your mind, compare this with a lara..lets take the 11 that lara heads. I am taking the present 11 which is far far ahead of the 11 that played once walsh and ambrose called it a day.

You think a Dravid, Ganguly, Laxman (in tests) can be compared to Chanderpaul, Sarwan and a gayle. they are all good players but then our guys are a cut above arent they?Be it technique or number of matches won solely by these guys..In such a situation, tendulkars pressure has considerably reduced over the last 4-5 years and with a Yuvraj coming after him, he has absolutely no worries and he can just focus on his way of playing.

But then why does our man falter 7 out of 10 times? Its a problem in the head.. He is not upto the challenge. He doesnt take up the challenge by the horn but instead takes it up by the tail..Thats already negative. Classic example - a debutant left arm spinner being padded away when India needed runs in SA?Justfiable?Lara in this situation would have taken the challenge up and murdered the bowler!! Thats the difference..

A De-Silva / Waugh would have hung in there no matter what and would have may be made a 80 ball 60 which is still decent as long as ur team sails home..Why then our man is being hyped is somethin that i cant fathom...May be we Indians being sentimental fools just focus on the topping and forget the contents of the ice cream..

Its time we celebrate teams like Australia who are a cut above all of us. A team doesnt need 11 SRT nor does it need 1..it just needs a decent batsmen who not only just feels that he will always win the match but ends up doing it.While SRT and team India belong to the former, Punter,De-silva and Waugh belong to the latter!

Mr. Aj Nathen,
I have no idea who you are, but on the whole, I think ur argument is spot on. but i just think one point needs some clarification:

1) he has not been a match-winning player

Thats not exactly true. It depends on what people recognize as a "match-winning performance". To most people, it is a performance, where the particular player goes on to finish off the chase (when the team is chasing), or bats for long, till the 40th or the 45 th over when the team bats first.

Now, its interesting to read the names of the guys you have listed out as "match-winners" - in your comment. Lara ... Steve Waugh ... Ponting ... Bevan ... Now, is any one of them a specialist opener?? No.

When the team successfully chases big scores or puts up a huge score, people generally remember the guy who finishes things off, not the guy who sets it up. The perfect example (as Vignesh -Thala keeps going on about again and again) . Remember the 3rd ODI match at Lahore against Pakistan in the recent series in Pakistan? Where india had to chase a big score (pressure situation, the series was at 1-1) - it was some 290 i think. During India's chase under lights, the ball was swinging all around the place. Umar Gul and Asif were doing magic with the ball. It really was high-quality pace bowling. The guy who braved it all (Rahul Dravid succumbed too!) and set up a fantastic 5 wicket win was Sachin Tendulkar. He scored a brilliant 95 - not as entertaining as some of his others, but a real masterclass. However, he got out with some 100 to win from 17 overs i think . In comes Dhoni, with his macho-image, his Reebok bat, trademark long flowing hair (which most stupid girls seem to love), high back lift, and exaggerated bat swings. He seals the game with 72 runs from just 46 balls, with some 2 overs to spare.

In all the joy and emotion (Sriram), people forget who made it all possible. The post match ceremony was all about dhoni, Man of the Match, even musharraf commented about how he loved Dhoni's hair and found it fashionable (We can safely say that Pakistan is the first country to have a gay Prime Minister). The bulletin in cricinfo was "dhoni and yuvraj clinch stirring win" ...

Amidst all this, Tendulkar's brilliant 95 was forgotten.. Sad, but thats what happens, people who bat lower down and "finish" it, steal all the attention. dont mistake me, i am a huge Dhoni fan, but that was Tendulkar's match ... Really was ...

Now that is why I believe people dont think Tendu is a "match-winner". It is unfair, but thats what happens most times.

To Go KP:

Agreed!!SRT has been there but hs not been there 65% of the times when we need him..

I understand that the phrase "when we need him" has considerably reduced over the last 5 years.. He has been taken off the pressure although some pple still think that he needs to score every match.. Anyways thats for those general public who think Sachin is God..

But facing reality, i think its more of whether he has steered the team to a must- win situation or not.its not just that he needs to stay on till the end.I understand that this opinion is of the general people and not of those criket passionate followers who think rational and know what they expect.People dont forget his 98 against Pakistan and say that Dravid and Yuvi won the match - did they?

Its all situations and the perspective that matters more..Thats where I feel that Mr.Srt has not always been the tendu that we associate him with. Thats where Lara tends to be the winner that he is ocme to know off..Its this way..Whats the point if u top ur class in all the school exams and dont top in ur finals...What do u say when this happens 7 out of 10 times?

Something called mental make up is what pple address and not the ability. No one is questioning SRT 's ability to score runs..Its only the situation and the need that is more important and that matters more than the runs scored before!

The stats read ..last 50 matches he has got 4 centuries..at an average of 40.out of the 4 centuries we lost in two..in one at peshawar he scored 123 (one of the best knocks i have seen) while chasing 330 odd but we lost.Wat more can a guy do.is dis not a match winning innings ? is it not a great effort.Take another instance..against WI he scored 141 to set the game up and yet our bolwers lose hte match.I dont know why people go all the way back to 2003 WC wen u ask "wen has sachin played a match winning innings"..if u ask me the same questoin..the answer would be a 100 not out against WI three ODIS before the WC..or as u guys always prefer DRAMATIC instances.. dat mind blowing 95 while chasing 290 in karachi .Just becos people only remember great chases or nail biting finishes like the one in NATWEST or hte indo pak encounter in 2003 or the chennai test (he scored a patient 100 with a sore back) or the dhaka ODI or the.he is not reponsible if people have a very bad memory or selective amnesia or only can remember matches wre india chased down big scores with sharukh in stands or wiht musharaff watchin or ... dunno wat to say... well all ODIS are important all series are important and for heavensake dont fuckin tell he scores against minnows..check cricinfo for stats.

If u guys are so desperate in knowing his records in so called important ODI's then check out his WC stats ( i can hear grumbles sayin dat was 4 years back machaan...but machaan..WCs are played only once in 4 years and so u have to go back 4 years to quote his great form in important matches ,i cnat help dat).iam not sayin he is still the best batsman in the team or he is stil the match winner he was 2 to 3 years back...if i say dat it means iam getting carried away by my emotions. i totally agree wen u say he is not the same SRT dat he was 3 years back..But if u guys havent read or heard about intrerviews of SRT..wre he says he has cutdown on certain attacking shots becos of his tennis elbow injury..i cant help u thr.

he sure has a mental block wen it comnes to attackin strokeplay but hasnt the team asked him to go down from opening (the most attackin and commanding position) to number 4 cos they (the team , coach ,rahul dravid) want him to be more defensive and conservative in his approach.Havent they made him or rather forced him to play the anchor role.is he responsible if our stupid captain want him to do dat..

regarding the question why rahul or ricky or steve waugh is not hyped as much as SRT or LARA. machan u need style not only results.. iam sure people wil be surprised if i say SRT is only the second best batsman in the indian cricket team..first comes rahul even for me..cos of his effectiveness in tests his consistency his character. In ODIS his greatest strenghs being adaptability , technique and shot range to bat from 1 to 8..i salute him for dat..and i cant imagine a greater fighter than Steve waugh or dominative batsman or captain than ricky(only in england SA or australia and only wen the oppostion doesnt have an off spinner of forget murali but of bhajjis standards..lol).. but as anoj put it he is an entertainer..a treat to watch..and lara ofcourse..who can play counter attck or spin as majestically as BC lara..

regarding Ian Chappels comments on SRT..his views regarding BC Lara overtakin sachin on the basis of current form and attackin stroke play as the worlds number one batsman is right. But wen he says "mirror mirror shud i retire."i will say Ian ian shut ur fuckin mouth ,u r talki crap..on srirams emotional outburst on y he shudnt have commented..dats total bullshit.he is a great player and is entitled to make such critisicm especially wen india and SRT have failed in a crucial situation..but wat he said about him retiring is completely wrong.

S: I believe that Chappel has no authority and if he had COMMEN SENSE he would not have made such a statement in an INDIAN media in SUCH A SITUATION.
the lines which were termed as emotional bullshit.

I beg to disagree, because in the first palce i cannot understand why it could possibly be emotinal? cos i was just saying that the person lacked commen sense as he was placing an argument in an unhealthy situation, due to which unnecessary and unforseen events may occur. let me explain. When Dhoni failed, Indian fans demanded his hair be cut, so now in the wake of such extreme criticism and demands being raised and when the house of certain players are being attacked and when the INDIAN police is trying provide protection to the players, IAN CHAPPEL, one of the GREAT CRICKETRS, comes out with his OPINION in the indian media which might lead to some jobless people in india doing useless activities for an ultimately useless cause. so i said that he lacked the COMMEN SENSE in judging the time in which he had to make this statement at the place in which he had to make it. INFACT, had some one attacked IAN CHAPPEL after the press conference FOR WAT HE SAID, then the world would have known his mistake. so what i was coming to say was not "MY EMOTIONAL BULLSHIT".

M: I am not angry cos some stupid australian made comments about Sachin. I am just stating that he doesnt commend enough authority in the eyes of a reade like me because he was not there to preaise Sachin or the INDIAN team, and i do not accept criticism from people who are always there when something wrong happens. NOW THIS DOESNT MEAN I AM EMOTIONAL (i am saying this because i guess i am talking to dead zombies as they dont either dont have emotions or dont know wat emotion is) I AM SIMPLY STATING MY OPINION.
